The Monad: The Big "One" at the Beginning of Everything
The Math of the Universe
In math, the word "Mono" means one. A "Monad" is the simplest, most basic unit of existence. But in Gnostic puzzles, the Monad is a "One" that contains "All."
Imagine you have a giant bucket of white paint.
Inside that white paint are all the colors: red, blue, yellow, and green.
You can’t see the red yet because it’s perfectly mixed in.
The Monad is like that bucket of paint before anyone starts dipping a brush in. It is Pure Potential.
The God Above God
Most people are used to a God who sits on a throne, gets angry, or makes rules. Gnostics thought that "God" was actually a lower-level character (the Demiurge).
The Monad is the "God Above God."
It doesn't have a body.
It doesn't have a gender.
It doesn't even have a name, because a name "labels" something, and you can’t label something that is infinite.
Gnostics call it the Bythos (The Deep) or the Invisible Spirit. It is like the silence in a room before a song starts. The silence isn't "nothing", it’s the space that allows the song to exist.
The "Spilling Over" (Emanation)
If the Monad is so perfect and alone, how did we get here?
The Monad didn't "build" the universe like a carpenter builds a house. Instead, the Monad overflowed. Think of a fountain. The water at the very top is the Monad. As the water overflows, it falls into lower basins.
The first "basin" it falls into is called Barbelo (the first thought of the Monad).
From there, it keeps spilling down into other beings called Aeons.
Each time the "water" spills into a lower basin, it gets a little further away from the source. Eventually, it gets so far away that the light starts to dim. That’s where our world, the physical world, comes in.
The Mirror and the Spark
Here is the most important part for you to contemplate: Gnostics believe a tiny piece of that top fountain is inside you.
They called this the Divine Spark. Imagine the Monad is a giant sun. Our world is a dark room. You are a tiny mirror. Even though you are in a dark room, you have a reflection of that sun trapped on your surface.
The Archons (the cosmic bullies) want to smudge your mirror, so you forget you have the light.
The Monad is the sun waiting for you to remember where your light came from.
How do we "know" the Monad?
You can't learn about the Monad by reading a science textbook or a history book. You learn about it through Gnosis (Internal Knowledge).
Since the Monad is the "Source," and you have a "Spark" of the source inside you, Gnostics believe that if you look deep enough into your own mind and spirit, you will eventually find the Monad. It’s like following a golden string back through a maze until you find the person holding the other end.
Summary of Concepts - The "Easy" Explanation
The Monad
The "Total One." The source of all light and life.
Emanation
The way light "leaks" out of the Monad to create other spirits.
The Pleroma
The "Fullness", the home of the Monad and the Aeons.
The Spark
The tiny piece of the Monad that lives inside your soul.
Why this is a "Brain-Twister"
The Monad is "In-effable." A word that means "Too big/awesome to be described in words." When you try to think about the Monad, you are trying to think about the "Before-the-Beginning." It’s the ultimate mystery. The Gnostics don't want to "worship" the Monad like a servant; they want to "reunite" with it like a long-lost family member.
